Lagna meaning: lagan kya hai?
Lagna is the sign of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In English it is called the ascendant or the rising sign. It is the single most personal point in a birth chart: the Moon's sign is shared by everyone born over two days, but the lagna changes about every two hours and depends on where you were born as well as when.
Vedic astrology reads the lagna for the body, health, temperament and the overall course of life, and it does something more basic too. The lagna becomes the first house of your kundli, and every other house is counted from it, so it decides which planet rules your career, your marriage, your wealth and the rest.
Why the time and place of birth decide it
As the Earth turns, all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon in a day, each for roughly two hours. Some rise faster than others, and the speeds change with latitude, so in north India a sign can take well under two hours or well over. Two people born an hour apart in the same hospital can have different lagnas, and so can two people born at the same minute in Delhi and Chennai. If your recorded time is rounded, and many are, check the result at the earliest and latest times it could be.

Lagna, rashi and Sun sign
Three signs get mixed up. The lagna is the sign rising at your birth. The rashi is the sign the Moon was in, read for the mind, and you can find it on its own with the rashi calculator. The Sun sign is what Western astrology means by “your sign”. A Vedic astrologer starts with the lagna and the rashi; the Sun sign plays a smaller part.
Vedic lagna and Western rising sign
If a Western ascendant or rising sign calculator gave you a different answer, both can be right. Western astrology measures the zodiac from the spring equinox, while Vedic astrology measures it from the fixed stars, and the two now sit about 24 degrees apart. So a rising point at 10 degrees of Scorpio in the Vedic zodiac is at about 4 degrees of Sagittarius in the Western one. The calculator gives you both, and the rest of this site uses the Vedic one.

Can I find my lagna without my birth time?
No. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so all twelve rise over a single day. Without a time any of them is possible. If your time is approximate, try the earliest and latest it could be; if both give the same lagna, you can rely on it.
What is the difference between lagna and rashi?
The lagna is the sign rising at your birth and is read for the body, temperament and the direction of your life; it also fixes the twelve houses of your kundli. The rashi is the sign the Moon was in and is read for the mind and emotions. They are often different signs.
Is lagna the same as ascendant or rising sign?
Yes, they are three names for the same point. The Vedic lagna and the Western rising sign usually fall in different signs, though, because Vedic astrology uses a zodiac about 24 degrees behind the Western one. The calculator shows both.
