A nakshatra is one of twenty-seven equal divisions of the sky, each exactly 13°20′ wide. Vedic astrology maps the heavens twice over: into the twelve rashis most people know as zodiac signs, and — far older and far more precise — into these twenty-seven lunar mansions. Every nakshatra has its own ruling planet, presiding deity, symbol and temperament. The one the Moon occupied at the moment you were born is your janma nakshatra, and in Jyotish it tells you more about who you are than your Sun sign ever will.
Divide 360 degrees by twenty-seven and you get 13°20′. That is the width of one nakshatra, and the arithmetic is not arbitrary — it is tied to the Moon.
The Moon takes roughly 27.3 days to travel the whole zodiac, which works out to about one nakshatra per day. The ancient astronomers who built this system were tracking where the Moon slept each night. That is what "lunar mansion" means quite literally: the Moon's resting place.

Western astrology puts the Sun at the centre. Jyotish does not.
In Vedic astrology the Moon governs the manas — the mind, the emotions, the instrument through which you actually experience your life. So the Moon's position is the first thing a Jyotishi looks at, and the nakshatra sharpens that position enormously.
Consider two people both born with the Moon in Taurus. One has it in Krittika, ruled by the Sun and symbolised by a blade. The other has it in Rohini, ruled by the Moon itself and symbolised by a flowering banyan. Same sign, same textbook description — and two entirely different people. Twelve signs cannot carry that much detail. Twenty-seven nakshatras, subdivided further into four padas each, can.
This is also why nakshatras do the practical work in Jyotish. Marriage matching, electional timing (muhurta), and the entire dasha system that predicts when events unfold all run on nakshatras, not signs.
The twenty-seven fall into three groups, each carrying one of the great functions of the cosmos — creation, preservation, and dissolution.

The first nine are about starting things: impulse, appetite, curiosity, the raw push of something coming into being.

Storm, then clarity. Ardra breaks down what no longer works and rebuilds sharper on the other side — the teardrop and the diamond are the same pressure.
The return of the light. Punarvasu recovers, renews, and begins again with its optimism somehow still intact.
Nourishing and steady. Widely considered the most auspicious nakshatra — the teacher, the caretaker, the one everybody else leans on.
Intuitive to the point of being unsettling. Ashlesha reads people almost instantly, heals with that insight, and keeps its own counsel.
Ancestral authority. Magha arrives carrying the weight and the dignity of everyone who came before, and rules from that inheritance.
Warmth, romance, and a genuine appetite for pleasure. Here rest and enjoyment are the point of the work, not the reward for it.
Generous and dependable. Aryaman governs contracts and friendship, and this nakshatra keeps its promises long after it stopped being convenient.
Skilled hands and a practical mind. Whatever Hasta can hold, it can make — craft, surgery, trade, sleight of hand.
The designer's eye. Chitra builds beautiful things and cares, sometimes to a fault, about how they look when finished.
Independent and endlessly adaptable. Swati bends with the wind instead of fighting it, and needs its freedom more than it needs company.
Fiercely goal-driven. Vishakha fixes on a single aim and refuses to look sideways until it has been reached.
Devotion and friendship. Anuradha builds loyalty slowly and thrives in company — the rare Scorpio placement that genuinely likes people.
The eldest. Protective and highly capable, quietly carrying responsibility it never actually asked to be given.
Digs to the root. Mula is pulled toward philosophy, research and origins, and will tear something apart to understand where it came from.
Invincible optimism — the name literally means "the undefeated". Purva Ashadha purifies, persuades, and simply declines to be discouraged.

Spiritual intensity with an edge to it. This nakshatra burns toward the transcendent and is not especially gentle about the burning.
Deep, still water. Compassionate and quietly wise, comfortable at depths that unnerve most people.
The last of the twenty-seven. Gentle, prosperous and protective — the guide who sees everyone else safely to the end of the road.
