Rashi Calculator: Meri Rashi Kya Hai?
Find your rashi, the Vedic Moon sign, from your date of birth, or your naam rashi from the first sound of your name. You also get your nakshatra and pada, your name letters, your Lagna if you know your birth time, and your Vedic and Western signs side by side.
What is a rashi? (Rashi kya hai)
A rashi is one of the twelve signs of the Vedic zodiac, and your rashi, or janma rashi, is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. In Vedic astrology the Moon stands for the mind, so the rashi is read for your emotional nature and the way you respond to life. It is also the sign your daily and yearly horoscope is written for, and the one Sade Sati is counted from.
In English the rashi is called the Moon sign or Chandra rashi. It should not be confused with the Western zodiac sign, which is the Sun's sign in a different zodiac. More on that below.
How to find your rashi (rashi kaise pata kare)
Apni rashi kaise jane? There are two ways, and the calculator above does both.
Date of birth se rashi kaise jane
The usual way is by date of birth: work out where the Moon was on the day you were born. The Moon spends about two and a quarter days in each sign, so for a little over half of all birthdays the date settles it. When the Moon changed sign during your birth day, the result shows both signs and the time of the change, and your birth time decides which is yours. If you were born outside India, add your place of birth so the day is counted on your own clock.
Naam se rashi kaise jane
The other way is by name, for when the birth date or time is not known. Each nakshatra pada has a sound, and the first sound of a name points to a pada and so to a rashi. Switch the calculator to “By name” to use it.
Rashi akshar: the name letters of each rashi (rashi naam)
The sounds are traditional, four to each nakshatra and nine to each rashi. Families still use them to choose a child's name from the birth nakshatra. Read them as sounds, not spellings: Priya starts with Pi, Krishna with Ki.

Your rashi is not your Western zodiac sign
Someone born on 1 August is a Leo in the magazines. Their Vedic Sun sign is Cancer, and their rashi can be any of the twelve, because it depends on the Moon. Two things cause this. Vedic astrology measures the zodiac from the fixed stars, and that zodiac now sits about 24 degrees behind the Western one, so the Sun is usually one sign back. And a rashi is the Moon's sign, which changes every two and a quarter days, not the Sun's, which changes once a month. The calculator shows all of these side by side so you can see which is which.
Rashi, nakshatra and lagna
Your rashi has two companions. The nakshatra is the finer division the Moon sits in, one of 27, and it sets the start of your Vimshottari dasha. The nakshatra calculator gives yours with its gana, nadi and yoni, and the nakshatra guide describes all 27. The lagna is the sign rising at your birth, which needs the exact time and decides the houses of your whole chart. Find yours with the lagna calculator, or see all three with the planets in your free kundli.
Your rashi is one line of your chart. The report reads the rest.
A rashi describes your mind. What happens in your life depends on the whole chart: your Lagna, the nine planets in their houses, and the dasha you are running.
Our detailed report reads all of it for your birth details and maps the next twelve months period by period. The sample shows exactly what you would receive.

Common questions
Meri rashi kya hai? Apni rashi kaise jane?
Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your date of birth in the calculator above and it gives your rashi at once. For a little over half of all birthdays the date alone is enough. On the days the Moon changes sign it shows both possibilities and the time of the change, and adding your birth time settles it.
Can I find my rashi without my birth time?
Often, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, so on a little over half of all dates it is in the same sign all day. On the rest it moves into the next sign during the day, and then your rashi depends on whether you were born before or after the change. The calculator tells you when that happens.
Rashi by name or by date of birth: which one is correct?
The rashi from your date of birth, called the janma rashi, is the one a kundli, horoscopes and Sade Sati use. The rashi from your name, the naam rashi, comes from the first sound of the name through the traditional syllable table. It is used to choose names and to match people whose birth details are not known. The two often differ.
Is rashi the same as zodiac sign?
No. The zodiac sign in magazines is the Western Sun sign. A rashi is the Vedic Moon sign. The two use different zodiacs, about 24 degrees apart, and different planets, so most people have a rashi that differs from the sign they read in the paper.
What is the difference between rashi and lagna?
Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in, and it describes the mind and emotions. Your lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, and it describes the body and temperament and sets the houses of your kundli. The rashi often needs only the date; the lagna needs the exact time and place.
How many rashis are there?
Twelve: Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) and Meen (Pisces). Each covers 30 degrees of the zodiac and holds nine nakshatra padas.
Which rashi is the best?
None. Every rashi has its strengths, and what a Moon sign promises depends on the rest of the chart: the house the Moon sits in, the planets with it, and its strength. The Moon is considered strongest in Vrishabh, where it is exalted, and under most strain in Vrishchik, where it is debilitated, but that is one factor among many.
