What is the Shani mahadasha?
The Shani mahadasha is the 19-year period ruled by Saturn in the Vimshottari dasha system, the 120-year cycle of planetary periods used in Vedic astrology. Shani Dev, the son of Surya Dev and Chhaya, is the planet of karma and justice: he gives exactly what our work has earned, slowly and for good. That is why his period is the time of responsibility, discipline, patience and results that last.
It comes after the 16-year Jupiter period and before the 17-year Mercury period, and runs through nine sub-periods (antardashas), from Saturn–Saturn to Saturn–Jupiter. Shani ki mahadasha has a fearsome reputation, but the classical texts describe it as anything from very rewarding to very demanding, depending on where Saturn sits in your chart.
Quick answers
- How long is it? 19 years, with nine antardashas from about 1 year 1 month (Ketu) to 3 years 2 months (Venus).
- Is it bad? No. It is demanding when Saturn is weak or in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, and rewarding when he is strong. For Taurus ascendants Saturn is the single most beneficial planet.
- Which phase is worst? It depends on your chart. The classics treat the Ketu and Rahu sub-periods as the most demanding in general, and the opening Saturn–Saturn stretch as slow when Saturn is in the 8th or 12th. The tool above shows yours.
- Is it the same as Sade Sati? No: Sade Sati is a 7½-year transit of Saturn over your Moon sign; the mahadasha is your 19-year period of Saturn. They can overlap.
- When does mine start? It depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Enter your birth details above for your exact dates.
The Shani mahadasha by the numbers
Because the order of the periods is fixed and only the starting point changes with the Moon at birth, the cycle can be worked out for everyone at once. We simulated 200,000 births with the Moon anywhere in the sky:
About 17% of people never meet a Shani mahadasha before 80. For those who do, it most often begins in their 30s, 40s or 50s (nearly half of all first Saturn periods start in those three decades). So it is common, but far from universal, and nothing to dread in advance.
What decides how your Saturn period goes
The classical texts judge Saturn's period by his strength and position in your birth chart:
- Rewarding: Saturn exalted in Libra, in his own signs Capricorn or Aquarius, in a friend's sign (Taurus, Gemini, Virgo), in his own or exalted navamsa, or in the 3rd or 11th house. The texts promise recognition, wealth, property, vehicles and a rise in position.
- Lifted further: Saturn joined or aspected by a benefic (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or a waxing Moon), in a kendra or trikona house, or in Sagittarius or Pisces.
- Demanding: Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in Aries (his sign of weakness), or too close to the Sun (combust). The period then asks for patience, routine and care with health and expenses.
- Your ascendant: which houses Saturn rules for you decides whether his period is, for you, a friend or a teacher (see below).
The tool above applies all of these to your chart.
Shani mahadasha for each ascendant
| Ascendant | Saturn is | What his period centres on |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Demanding | Saturn rules your 10th house (career) and 11th (gains). The classics count him among the less helpful planets for Aries because of the 11th, yet his period is often when a career is built brick by brick. |
| Taurus | Yogakaraka (best planet) | Saturn rules your 9th house (fortune) and 10th (career), which makes him your yogakaraka: the single most beneficial planet for Taurus. His period can be the best of your life. |
| Gemini | Mixed | Saturn rules your 8th house (change, research, shared money) and 9th (fortune, teachers). His period mixes deep transformation with growing wisdom and luck. |
| Cancer | Mixed | Saturn rules your 7th house (marriage, partnership) and 8th (change, shared money). His period centres on commitments, partners and the long view; health deserves steady care. |
| Leo | Demanding | Saturn rules your 6th house (work, health, rivals) and 7th (marriage, partnership). The classics count him less helpful for Leo, so his period asks for patience in partnerships and care with health, and rewards hard work. |
| Virgo | Mixed | Saturn rules your 5th house (studies, children, creativity) and 6th (work, service, competition). His period suits disciplined study, service and steady work. |
| Libra | Auspicious | Saturn rules your 4th house (home, property), a kendra, and your 5th (studies, children, intelligence), a trikona, and he is exalted in Libra itself. The classics count him among the most auspicious planets for Libra: his period often brings property, comfort and recognition. |
| Scorpio | Demanding | Saturn rules your 3rd house (effort, courage, siblings) and 4th (home, mother, property). The classics count him less helpful for Scorpio, so his period asks for patience at home and rewards persistent effort. |
| Sagittarius | Mixed | Saturn rules your 2nd house (income, family, speech) and 3rd (effort, skills). His period builds wealth slowly through your own work; health deserves steady care. |
| Capricorn | Auspicious | Saturn is your Lagna lord, ruling your 1st house (self) and 2nd (wealth). His period is about you: discipline, standing and savings built to last. |
| Aquarius | Auspicious | Saturn is your Lagna lord, ruling your 1st house (self) and 12th (expenses, foreign lands). His period is deeply personal: a time to build your life on your own terms, often with links abroad. |
| Pisces | Demanding | Saturn rules your 11th house (gains, friends) and 12th (expenses, foreign lands). The classics count him less helpful for Pisces, so keep a budget; his period often brings gains through networks and work abroad. |
The nine antardashas of the Shani mahadasha
Each sub-period lasts 19 years times the sub-period planet's years, divided by 120, in this order. Your own dates, and how each one reads for your chart, are in the tool above.
Shani mahadasha, Saturn antardasha · 3 years 3 days
Saturn at full strength sets the tone for nineteen years.
Responsibilities grow and results come through effort. For a well-placed Saturn this brings a high position, property and family happiness; when he is in the 8th or 12th, the opening is slower and the last part improves.
Traditional remedy: the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, with devotion to Bhagwan Shiva.
Shani mahadasha, Mercury antardasha · 2 years 8 months 9 days
Learning, business, reputation and good company.
Often one of the brighter stretches: income, recognition, travel to sacred places and an active mind, especially with Mercury in a kendra or trikona.
Traditional remedy: reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama and giving chana (gram) in charity.
Shani mahadasha, Ketu antardasha · 1 year 1 month 9 days
A short, inward stretch.
The classics treat it as demanding even when Ketu is well placed: changes of position, travel and a pull towards simplicity. Ketu with your Lagna lord, or well placed from Saturn, lightens it.
Traditional remedy: charity, especially for the care of animals.
Shani mahadasha, Venus antardasha · 3 years 2 months
Marriage, comforts, income and honours.
With Venus in a good house and supported by benefics, this is the classic window for marriage, a child, vehicles and recognition within Saturn’s period.
Traditional remedy: the Durga Saptashati path in devotion to Maa Durga, and charity.
Shani mahadasha, Sun antardasha · 11 months 12 days
Employers, seniors and standing.
Good relations with people in authority when the Sun is strong. When it is in the 8th or 12th, care with heart health and dealings with officials.
Traditional remedy: worship of Surya Dev, such as water offered at sunrise.
Shani mahadasha, Moon antardasha · 1 year 7 months
Home, family, comforts and the mind.
A strong or waxing Moon brings fortune and happiness with family; a weak Moon asks for rest and steadiness of mind.
Traditional remedy: a havan, and giving jaggery, ghee, and rice with curd in charity.
Shani mahadasha, Mars antardasha · 1 year 1 month 9 days
Property, energy and courage.
A strong Mars brings property, a new home and recognition from the start; a weak Mars asks you to avoid disputes and risky moves.
Traditional remedy: a havan and charity.
Shani mahadasha, Rahu antardasha · 2 years 10 months 6 days
Ambition, restlessness and travel.
Demanding when Rahu is poorly placed, with busy, unsettled months; in a favourable position, gains, travel and good relations with authority.
Traditional remedy: the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and charity.
Shani mahadasha, Jupiter antardasha · 2 years 6 months 12 days
Success, learning, family and devotion.
Usually the most graceful close to Saturn’s period when Jupiter is well placed: success all round, learned company and happiness from family.
Traditional remedy: reciting the Shiva Sahasranama and giving gold in charity.
Shani mahadasha and Sade Sati
The two are often confused. Sade Sati (also called elinati Shani in the South) is Saturn's transit through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the sign after it: about 7½ years, returning roughly every 30 years. The Shani mahadasha is your 19-year period of Saturn, which comes once in the 120-year cycle, if at all.
When a Sade Sati falls inside the mahadasha, Saturn's themes are at their strongest: those are the years for the most patience and the steadiest routine. The tool above lists every Sade Sati of your life and shows which overlap your mahadasha, with the exact dates worked out from Saturn's real motion.
Shani mahadasha for career, money, marriage and health
Career. Saturn rewards consistent, honest work and long-term thinking. Many people reach their most stable professional years in this period: steady promotions, government or large-organisation roles, engineering, law, administration, agriculture, mining and work that serves many people. Shortcuts rarely last.
Money. Wealth builds slowly and lasts. Property, savings and long-term investments suit Saturn better than speculation. Debts are best cleared, not added to.
Marriage and relationships. Saturn favours commitment and maturity. Marriages in his period are often to an older or more serious partner, or come after some delay. The Venus sub-period is the classic window.
Health. Saturn governs bones, joints, teeth and the nerves. Regular exercise, a steady routine, good sleep and early attention to small problems matter more than usual in his period.
Family and home. Responsibilities for elders and family often increase. Property and a settled home are common achievements of a good Saturn period.
Spiritual life. Saturn turns the mind towards duty, service and simplicity. Many people take up disciplined spiritual practice in this period, and find it the most rewarding thing it brings.
After Saturn: the Mercury mahadasha
The Saturn period hands over to Mercury's 17 years, which many people feel as lighter and quicker: business, learning, communication and travel come forward. The last sub-period of Saturn, Jupiter, is often a graceful bridge. Your exact handover date is in the dasha calculator.

Questions about the Shani mahadasha
How long is the Shani mahadasha?
Nineteen years, the second longest of the nine Vimshottari periods after Venus (20 years). It follows the 16-year Jupiter mahadasha and is followed by the 17-year Mercury mahadasha. If you were born with the Moon in Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada, your life began in the Saturn period, so your first one is shorter.
Shani ki mahadasha kya hoti hai?
Shani ki mahadasha is the 19-year period ruled by Shani (Saturn) in the Vimshottari dasha system. In these years Saturn’s themes lead your life: hard work, responsibility, patience, discipline and results that last. Whether it feels heavy or rewarding depends on where Saturn sits in your own chart.
Shani ki mahadasha kitne saal ki hoti hai?
Shani ki mahadasha 19 saal ki hoti hai. Iske andar nau antardashas aati hain, Shani–Shani se shuru hokar Shani–Guru par khatam. Aapki apni dates upar ke tool mein dekh sakte hain.
Which phase of Shani mahadasha is worst?
There is no single worst phase for everyone. The classics judge each sub-period by where its planet sits from your ascendant and from Saturn. In general they treat the Ketu and Rahu sub-periods as the most demanding, and the Saturn–Saturn opening as slow when Saturn is in the 8th or 12th house. The tool above reads all nine for your chart and shows which need the most care.
Is the Shani mahadasha bad?
Not by itself. Saturn is feared because he asks for effort and patience, but his period is also when many people build their most stable careers, buy property and earn lasting respect. For Taurus ascendants Saturn is the yogakaraka, the most beneficial planet of all, and for Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius he is counted auspicious.
Is the Shani mahadasha good for some people?
Yes. The classics expect a rewarding Saturn period when he is exalted in Libra, in his own signs Capricorn or Aquarius, in a friend’s sign, in his own or exalted navamsa, in the 3rd or 11th house, or joined or aspected by a benefic.
Shani mahadasha after 40 years: does age change it?
There is no fixed age for the Shani mahadasha: when it starts depends on the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. For those who have one, it most often begins in their 30s, 40s or 50s. What changes its results is where Saturn sits in your chart, not your age.
Are Sade Sati and the Shani mahadasha the same?
No. The Shani mahadasha is your 19-year period of Saturn in the dasha system. Sade Sati is Saturn’s 7½-year transit over the sign before, the sign of and the sign after your Moon, which comes round about every 30 years. They can overlap; the tool above shows whether yours do.
What comes after the Shani mahadasha?
The Mercury mahadasha, 17 years long. Many people feel it as a lighter, more active period after Saturn: business, learning, communication and travel come forward.
Neelam (blue sapphire) poori kundli dekhe bina nahi pehnna chahiye.
