What is the Rahu mahadasha?
Rahu is the north node of the Moon: not a body in the sky but the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Tradition tells how, at the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), the asura Swarbhanu took his place among the devtas to drink amrit. The Sun and the Moon recognised him, and Bhagwan Vishnu, in his Mohini form, severed his head with the Sudarshan Chakra. Having tasted amrit, he could not die: the head became Rahu and the body Ketu.
That story explains Rahu's nature: a head with endless appetite, always reaching for more. His mahadasha lasts 18 years. It follows Mars and comes before Jupiter, and it is often the period in which people chase their biggest ambitions, change direction, go abroad or rise fast.
