Nakshatra Calculator: Find Your Janma Nakshatra

Mera nakshatra kya hai? Find your birth star from your date and time of birth, or the nakshatra your name points to. You get the pada, nakshatra lord, deity, gana, nadi and yoni, your name letters and your rashi, and the dasha your life began in.

Type your birth city to search — coordinates are set automatically.

The Moon changes nakshatra about once a day, so add your birth time for a single answer. Without it you get every nakshatra of your birth day with its time window.

What is a janma nakshatra? (Nakshatra kya hai)

The nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, equal divisions of the zodiac of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, one for roughly every day the Moon takes to go round. Your janma nakshatra, or birth star, is the one the Moon was in when you were born. It is finer than the rashi and more personal: it shapes temperament, gives the sound your name traditionally starts with, and decides which planetary period, or dasha, your life begins in.

How to find your nakshatra (nakshatra kaise pata kare)

Mera nakshatra kaun sa hai, and how do you find it? You need your date and time of birth, and your place if you were born outside India. The time matters more here than for the rashi. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day, so on 96 days in 100 it is in two different nakshatras at the start and end of the day. With the time, the calculator gives one nakshatra and pada. Without it, you get each nakshatra of your birth day with its time window.

If you know only a name, switch to “By name”. Each pada has a sound, and the first sound of a name points to a nakshatra pada. That gives the nakshatra the name was chosen for, which is not always the janma nakshatra.

Nakshatra lord and your dasha

Every nakshatra has a ruling planet, and the nine lords repeat in a fixed order three times round the zodiac: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. The lord of your janma nakshatra is the planet whose Vimshottari dasha you were born into. How much of that first period you had left at birth depends on how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra, which is why a precise time gives precise dasha dates. The full periods are Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17, 120 years in all. Your free kundli lists your own periods with dates.

Gana (gan), nadi and yoni of your nakshatra

Three more qualities come with every nakshatra. They are what kundli matching compares, so families often look them up before a match.

  • Gana is temperament: Deva (gentle, idealistic), Manushya (balanced, worldly) or Rakshasa (independent, intense). Rakshasa does not mean bad; it describes a strong will. Gana carries 6 of the 36 matching points.
  • Nadi is one of three: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) or Antya (Kapha). Two partners with the same Nadi have Nadi dosha, the heaviest of the matching factors at 8 points.
  • Yoni is an animal, from the horse to the elephant, read for instinctive and physical compatibility. It carries 4 points.

Gan kaise pata kare? Find your nakshatra with the calculator above; the gan comes with it. These are the nakshatras of each gan:

The rashi calculator groups the same sounds by rashi, and the lagna calculator finds your rising sign.

Your nakshatra starts the clock. The report reads what each period brings.

Your nakshatra decides which dasha you were born into and when each one after it begins. What those periods bring depends on where their lords sit in your chart.

Our detailed report reads your dasha against the whole chart and maps the next twelve months period by period. The sample shows exactly what you would receive.

Common questions

Mera janam nakshatra kya hai? Nakshatra kaise jane?

Your janma nakshatra is the nakshatra the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your date, time and place of birth in the calculator above and it gives your nakshatra and pada with its lord, deity, gana, nadi, yoni and name letters. You can also find the nakshatra your name points to with the "By name" option.

Can I find my nakshatra without my birth time?

Only partly. The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day, so on most dates it passes through two of them, and on some dates three. Without a time the calculator lists every nakshatra and pada of your birth day with its time window, so you can pick yours if you know roughly when you were born.

What is a nakshatra pada?

Each nakshatra is divided into four quarters called padas, each 3 degrees 20 minutes wide. The pada fixes the sound used for a name and the navamsa sign, and it can matter in matching, where two people in the same nakshatra but different padas are treated differently.

Nakshatra by name or by date of birth: which is correct?

The nakshatra from your birth date and time, the janma nakshatra, is the one that sets your dasha and is used in a kundli. The nakshatra from your name comes from the first sound of the name through the traditional syllable table. It is used to choose names and to match people whose birth details are not known.

Is Rakshasa gana (rakshas gan) bad?

No. Gana describes temperament: Deva is gentle and idealistic, Manushya is balanced and worldly, and Rakshasa is independent, intense and strong-willed. Rakshasa gana does not mean a bad person. It matters mainly in kundli matching, where the Gana koota carries 6 of the 36 points.

What is the difference between nakshatra and rashi?

Both come from the Moon at birth. The rashi is the sign the Moon was in, one of 12, each 30 degrees wide. The nakshatra is the finer division, one of 27, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide. A rashi holds two and a quarter nakshatras, so knowing your nakshatra and pada also tells you your rashi.

Which nakshatra is the best?

None is best for everything. Each nakshatra has its own deity, nature and strengths, and what it gives depends on the rest of the chart and the dasha running. Some are favoured for particular undertakings, as Pushya is for buying gold and starting new work, but that is a matter of timing, not of the person born in it.
