Manglik Calculator: Am I Manglik?

You are Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your birth chart and nothing in the chart cancels it, which leaves about one person in four after the cancellations. Enter your date of birth below to check yours.

The check counts Mars from your Lagna, Moon and Venus, names every exemption and cancellation it applies, and tells you if you are anshik, full or double Manglik. Add your partner to see where the two of you stand.

Needed for the Lagna check. Without it the Moon and Venus are still checked.

What Manglik means

Manglik describes a person whose birth chart has Mars, Mangal in Hindi, in one of a handful of houses that are tied to marriage and home. The condition itself is Mangal dosha, and it goes by many names: Manglik dosha, Mangal dosh, Kuja dosha in Telugu and Kannada, Chevvai dosham in Tamil, Bhauma dosha in Sanskrit. They all mean the same thing.

Mars is the planet of heat, drive and conflict. That is useful in a soldier, a surgeon or a founder. In the houses of the spouse and the home, astrologers read it as friction: a short temper, arguments, a restless partnership, and in the old wording, danger to the spouse. The last part is where the fear around being Manglik comes from, and it is far beyond what most astrologers would claim today.

The original rule is a single verse. It names five houses, the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th from the Lagna, and adds a condition people tend to forget: Mars there causes the dosha only when no benefic planet joins it or aspects it. Everything else, the Moon and Venus as reference points, the 2nd house, the list of exemptions, came later.

How the Manglik check works

Astrologers count the house Mars occupies from three points in the chart, not one. The Lagna stands for the body and the self, and it is the reference most of them weigh first. The Moon stands for the mind. Venus is the planet of marriage itself. A chart where Mars is in a Manglik house from more than one of these carries the dosha more strongly than a chart where only one is affected.

HouseWhat it governsWho counts it
1stSelf and temperamentCounted in the North. Some South Indian astrologers leave it out.
2ndFamily, speech and foodCounted in the South only. North Indian practice ignores it.
4thHome and domestic peaceCounted everywhere.
7thThe spouse and the partnershipCounted everywhere. The heaviest of the six.
8thLongevity of the marriageCounted everywhere. Weighed with the 7th.
12thBed comforts, expenses and lossesCounted everywhere.

The calculator above counts the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses as Manglik everywhere. It shows the 2nd house separately and labels it as the South Indian rule, so you get the answer for either tradition. Houses are counted by sign, the way a kundli is drawn.

How common is it to be Manglik?

Far more common than the worry around it suggests. We ran the check on this page on 20,000 birth charts, cast for random moments between 1950 and 2010 at places across India. These are the shares:

Mars in a Manglik house from the Lagna42%
From the Lagna, counting the 2nd house too50%
From at least one of Lagna, Moon or Venus80%
Still Manglik after the cancellations26%
Of which: anshik (partial)10%
Of which: Manglik11%
Of which: double Manglik5%

The first number is simple arithmetic: five of the twelve houses are Manglik, so Mars lands in one of them from any single reference about 42% of the time. Count from all three references and eight people in ten have Mars in a Manglik house from at least one. The cancellations remove most of these, and about one person in four is left with the dosha in some form. Only one in twenty is double Manglik.

When Mangal dosha is cancelled

Cancellation is where calculators disagree most. Some apply none, so more than four charts in ten come out Manglik from the Lagna alone. Others apply a list of fifteen or more softening conditions, and almost nobody stays Manglik. This page applies the cancellations that are widely accepted, names each one in your result, and lists the debated ones separately without letting them change the verdict.

Mars in an exempt sign for its house

In each Manglik house there are signs where Mars is said to cause no dosha. A placement in one of these drops out for that reference point only.

Conditions that cancel the dosha for the whole chart

  • Jupiter with Mars, or aspecting it. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself. This is the benefic protection the original verse asks about, and it applies to about a third of all charts.
  • Venus in the same sign as Mars. Venus is the other natural benefic.
  • Mars in Leo or Aquarius. In these two signs Mars is held to cause no dosha in any house.
  • A Cancer or Leo Lagna. For these two Lagnas Mars rules both a kendra and a trikona house and becomes a yogakaraka, a planet that brings good results, so it does not act as a dosha.
  • Both partners Manglik. The oldest rule says the dosha ceases when two people who both carry it marry. Use the partner check above to see this for a couple.

Debated conditions we show but do not count

Mars retrograde, combust (close to the Sun), in its own sign or exalted, at the very edge of a sign, or joined by Mercury are each read by some astrologers as softening the dosha. Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or the Sun beside Mars are read as making it hotter. Practice is split on all of these, so your result lists the ones present in your chart and leaves the verdict to the rules above.

Manglik and non-Manglik marriage

A Manglik marrying a Manglik is the match tradition looks for, since the dosha is said to cancel between them. A Manglik marrying a non-Manglik is the case families worry about, and the answer most astrologers give is that it depends on how strong the dosha is. A partial or cancelled dosha is rarely treated as a barrier. A double Manglik chart is weighed more carefully, alongside the guna score, and remedies such as Kumbh vivah exist for exactly this situation.

Our kundli matching checks both partners for Mangal dosha with the same rules as this page, and adds the guna score out of 36 with the Nadi and Bhakoot checks.

Does Manglik dosha end at 28?

This is the most repeated claim about the dosha and it has no basis in the rule itself. It comes from a different idea, that every planet matures at a set age: Jupiter at 16, the Sun at 22, the Moon at 24, Venus at 25, Mars at 28, Mercury at 32 and Saturn at 36. A matured Mars is said to act with more control, and so many families prefer a Manglik to marry after 28. That is a reasonable preference. It does not mean the dosha leaves the chart, because the chart never changes.

Mangal dosha remedies, upay and nivaran

Remedies are meant for a dosha that is actually present. If your result says cancelled or not Manglik, none of this is needed.

  • Mantra. The Mars beej mantra, Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, traditionally recited 10,000 times over a set period, or 108 times on Tuesdays.
  • Hanuman worship. Hanuman Chalisa or Sundar Kand on Tuesdays, and visiting a Hanuman temple. The Mangal Chandika stotra is the other common recitation.
  • Tuesday fast. Mangalvar vrat, kept with one meal, often without salt.
  • Charity. Red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery, red cloth or copper, given on Tuesdays.
  • Kumbh vivah or Arka vivah. A symbolic marriage before the real one, to a pot or a Vishnu idol for a woman, to the Arka plant for a man.
  • Mangal dosh puja. Done at many temples. The best known are Mangalnath in Ujjain, held to be the birthplace of Mars, and Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamil Nadu, the Mars temple of the nine Navagraha shrines.
  • Red coral. Often sold as the Mangal dosh remedy. Coral strengthens Mars, which is not always what a chart needs, so wear it only after an astrologer has read your whole chart.

Mars is one planet. Your marriage is read from the whole chart.

Whether Mangal dosha matters in your life depends on what this check cannot see: the strength of your 7th house and its lord, your Navamsa, the marriage chart, and the dasha you are running when marriage comes up.

The detailed report reads all of it: Mars and every other planet with its nakshatra, all twelve houses, your yogas and doshas with their cancellations, your divisional charts, your dasha timeline with a 12-month forecast, and remedies with the mantra, fast and days that suit you. The sample report shows exactly what you would receive.

Common questions

Manglik kya hota hai? What does Manglik mean?

A person is Manglik when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of their birth chart, counted from the Lagna, and nothing in the chart cancels it. The condition is called Mangal dosha, Manglik dosha, Kuja dosha or, in Tamil, Chevvai dosham. It is read mainly for marriage, because Mars in these houses is said to bring heat and friction into married life.

Am I Manglik? How do I check?

Enter your date of birth in the calculator on this page, with your birth time and place if you know them. It counts the house Mars falls in from your Lagna, your Moon and your Venus, drops the placements the tradition exempts, applies the cancellations, and tells you whether you are not Manglik, partially Manglik, Manglik or double Manglik, with the reason for each step.

Manglik kaise pata kare? How to find out from a kundli by hand?

Find the house marked 1 (the Lagna) and count to the house holding Mars, counting the Lagna itself as one. If Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, Mars is in a Manglik house from the Lagna. Do the same from the house holding the Moon and the house holding Venus. Then check the cancellations: Jupiter with or aspecting Mars, Venus with Mars, Mars in Leo or Aquarius, a Cancer or Leo Lagna, or one of the exempt sign-and-house pairs.

What is anshik (partial) Manglik?

Anshik means partial. The word is used in two ways: for Mars in a Manglik house from only one of the three reference points (the Moon or Venus, not the Lagna), and for a dosha that is present but softened. This page uses the first meaning, because it can be checked. About one person in ten is anshik Manglik by that measure.

What is double Manglik?

Double Manglik means Mars is in a Manglik house from both the Lagna and the Moon, with no cancellation. It is the strongest form of the dosha. About one person in twenty has it.

Does Manglik dosha end at 28?

There is no such rule in the classical description of the dosha. The belief comes from a separate idea, that each planet matures at a certain age, and Mars matures at 28. Many astrologers say a Manglik chart is easier after that age and some families wait for it, but no text says the dosha disappears. If the chart has it, it has it for life.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Yes, and many do. Tradition prefers a Manglik partner for a Manglik, because the oldest rule says the dosha ceases when two people who both carry it marry. Astrologers routinely approve a Manglik and non-Manglik match when the dosha is partial or cancelled, when the guna score is good, or after remedies such as Kumbh vivah.

What is Kumbh vivah?

A ritual marriage performed before the real wedding, in which a Manglik woman is married to a clay pot (kumbh), or to an idol of Vishnu or a peepal tree. The belief is that the dosha falls on the first marriage and leaves the real one free. The version for men is Arka vivah, a marriage to the Arka plant.

What are the remedies for Mangal dosha (mangal dosh ke upay)?

The common ones are reciting the Mars mantra Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, Hanuman Chalisa or the Mangal Chandika stotra on Tuesdays, keeping the Tuesday fast, giving away red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth on Tuesdays, Kumbh or Arka vivah before marriage, and the Mangal dosh puja at the Mangalnath temple in Ujjain. Red coral strengthens Mars and should only be worn on an astrologer's advice.

Is Manglik dosha different for females and males?

The calculation is the same for both. The old texts phrased the rule once for a woman and once for a man, and in practice the dosha has been held against women far more than men. A Manglik man and a Manglik woman have the same dosha, and the same cancellations and remedies apply.

Can I check Manglik without a birth time?

Partly. Without the time the Lagna is unknown, so the Lagna check, the one astrologers weigh most, cannot be done. The Moon and Venus checks still work, and this calculator gives you those, splitting the day if the Moon changed sign on your birth date. For a definite answer you need the birth time.

Why do different websites give different Manglik results?

Because they use different rules. Some count only from the Lagna, some from the Lagna, Moon and Venus. Some include the 2nd house and some the 1st. Some apply no cancellations and some apply a list so long that almost nobody stays Manglik. This page shows each step, so you can see exactly which rule decided your result.
